No Scheduled Hatches Pending ~Taking Time to Help Improve Breeding Lines~
Chick 101
Being a first time chicken owner can be daunting. It is a completely unique experience, that comes with a huge learning curb. To help ease the transition of being a first time (or experienced!) chicken owner I have created a list of basic supplies and tips.
Supply list: - A water dish - A food dish - Chick food: If wanting a medicated feed I recommend, Manna Pro Medicated Chick Starter, if not, Dumor Organic 19% Chick Starter Crumble also works particularly well. - A plastic container or storage tub - Heat Lamp - Light Bulb - Shavings/Hay (I recommend fine shaved aspen or pine and for hay orchard) - A flat low brick (to place the water dish on to prevent tipping)
Tips: 1. Always test out a heat lamp for at least an hour before placing the chicks in the brooder. This allows you to verify the equipment is working properly. 2. Make sure there are "cool" spots available in the brooder in case the chicks get too hot. 3. When cleaning out the brooder replace the dirty substrate with the same kind you previously used. For example if the brooder was filled with aspen shavings refill it with clean aspen shaving, not orchard hay. 4. When observing your chicks, take note of ones that look sickly or weak. If the selected chick's health does not improve make sure to give extra attention to this individual. Personally feed it and offer it water, even consider given it special treats.
